This theme seems to be a little tricky to get perfect when setting up so I’ve provided some details below courtesy of Smashing Magazine.

Gallery is a beautiful, free, gallery-style Thematic child theme for WordPress, designed by Christopher Wallace especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers. It is extremely flexible and can be used as a starting point for design galleries and portfolios.

Gallery is packed with loads of cool features like a jQuery slide hover effect on thumbnails, lazyloading for thumbnails (great if using a lot of thumbnails on one page), built-in social media links for each gallery item and seamless integration with the following plugins: WP-PostRatings, BuySellAds plugin, and Contact Form 7.

Features

WordPress 2.7 compatible

Built on the Thematic framework

jQuery hover effects

‘Save to Delicious’ link

‘Tweet This’ link

Flexible footer widget area

WP-PostRatings integration

Contact Form 7 integration

BuySellAds plugin integration

Usage & Installation

To use the Gallery Theme, you will need to follow these installation instructions:

Download the latest version of Thematic.

Download the latest version of the Gallery WordPress theme.

Unzip and upload both themes to your “wp-content/themes/” directory.

In WordPress, go to “Appearance > Themes” and activate the “Gallery” theme.

To change the number of items displayed on the home page, go to
“Settings > Reading” and change “Blog pages show at most” to 28 (4
rows) or 35 (5 rows) or more for the LazyLoad plugin to work its magic. LazyLoader will automatically delay loading of thumbnails that are out of the user’s view.

Adding Gallery Items

To use the default options for the Gallery Theme, here are instructions for creating gallery entries:

Create a thumbnail for each entry sized 125×125

Create a full-sized image for each entry sized 500×375

Upload both images to /wp-content/uploads or use the image uploader in WordPress to upload the images to the same folder

Next, create a custom field called “thumbnail” and enter the
location of the thumbnail file, for example
“/wp-content/uploads/design-name-125×125.jpg”

You will need to create another custom field called “full-image” and enter the location of the full-size image in that field.

You may also enter custom fields for “web-url” and “designer” if you want to add additional information to each entry.

Setting Up Star Ratings

Install the WP-Post Ratings plugin from WordPress.org. Activate both the plugin and the widgets.

To switch the type of images to transparent .PNGs, open wp-content/plugins/wp-postratings/wp-postratings.php in a text editor and change the following lines (should be near the top of the document):### Define Image Extension
define(‘RATINGS_IMG_EXT’, ‘gif’);
//define(‘RATINGS_IMG_EXT’, ‘png’);

to match this:

### Define Image Extension
//define(‘RATINGS_IMG_EXT’, ‘gif’);
define(‘RATINGS_IMG_EXT’, ‘png’);

Then upload that file back into the plugins folder.

In your WordPress admin panel, click the Ratings > Options link on the left sidebar.

The transparent .PNG stars should be selected by default.

Under ‘Ratings AJAX Style’ change ‘Show Loading Image With Text’ to ‘No’ and ‘Show Fading In And Fading Out Of Ratings’ to ‘No.’

Click ‘Save Changes.’

Now click the ‘Ratings Templates’ on the left sidebar.

Replace the text in the ‘Ratings Vote Text’ box with the following code:%RATINGS_IMAGES_VOTE%

Replace the text in the ‘Ratings Voted Text’ with the following code:%RATINGS_IMAGES%

Click the ‘Save’ button.

You should now see your star ratings show on the gallery single pages next to the title of the gallery item.

Adding widgets to the footer

Make sure you activated the WP-Post Ratings widgets when you activated the plugin.

In your WordPress Admin, click Widgets on the sidebar.

From the drop-down box under ‘Current Widgets’ select ’1st Subsidiary Aside’ and click ‘Show.’

Drag the widgets you’d like to see shown in this area from left to right (Highest Rated, Most Rated, Recent Comments, etc.)

Click ‘Save.’

You should now see your widgets in the footer.

You can preview it here or download it here.

Only a few days ago I actually decided to give myself a boot up the backside and start blogging more and the response has blown me away! To be perfectly honest I thought I’d be blogging away and nobody would actually be reading what I write and only visiting if they accidentally clicked a link to here, but it appears that I already have some more permanent and loyal people hanging around by reading some comments. Comments always make my day and motivate me a hell of alot – I even opened up Photoshop to have a play yesterday due to being so impressed and motivated by some of the comments and me opening Photoshop to add to my scrapbook doesn’t often happen lately!

I’ve always had a soft spot for the set of themes that Site5 gave to the community, they provided us with several themes that were given maximum attention and we can only say thankyou!

One thing I have noticed is that for some reason on my installation of wordpress (both on local test server and my live web server) some of the themes they gave to us didn’t display properly. That could be due to lack of plugin configuration or there could be a genuine problem with some installations and/or versions of wordpress but all the same I urge you to not just throw this one in the bin without trying it first as I know many people who tried it on their server and it worked.

I’ll be adding the other themes in time because in my oppinion the world should see these! Just be patient enough to mess with the plugins that come with the theme, it’s well worth it.

Features

WordPress 3.0 Menu Management Support

Easy to setup, Theme Options Page

3 color schemes

Cufon Font Replacement Support

Widget ready, Theme Options Page

Ads support with enable/disable option

Flickr Photostream with enable/disable option

JQuery Lightbox, Superfish Dropdown Menus, Slider

Ajax based contact form

Live form email validation

You can preview the theme here and download it here.

Agregado is a theme I personally used for quite some time not too long ago. My all time favourite part of this theme was the twitter feed to the right of the home page, I would also recommend this theme but to get it exactly how I wanted it I did make some changes to the code but as usual that’s probably just me being picky!

The theme features a built-in lifestream module and contact form with custom control panel options. It is commissioned by Smashing Magazine and designed especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers.

You can use the theme for all your projects for free and without any restrictions. However, it’s forbidden to sell or redistribute the theme without both designer’s and Smashing Magazine’s permission.

Requirements

WordPress 2.6+

Firefox 3.0+, Safari 3.0+, IE7+

Host server with PHP5+ installed

I wanted to stick to articles that are aimed more towards IT technicians like myself that need to research a problem now and again just to be headed in the right direction but in my article Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 won’t connect to WPA wireless I thought it maybe necessary as part of following the help in the article involves disabling some hardware in the Device Manager and I can imagine a large number of people coming across the problem discussed in that post.

Anyway, it doesn’t take much to access Device Manager, it’s simply a click this, then that and so on, so it’s probably more appropriate to put it in a quick list.

Right click on the ‘My Computer’ icon and click properties. (If the icon isn’t on the desktop click start and it’ll be in that menu, also titled ‘Computer’ if using Vista).

If using Windows XP goto the ‘hardware’ tab and there will be a ‘Device Manager’ button in there, click this. If using vista, ‘Device Manager’ will be situated in the column to the left.

2 steps, that’s all!

I say Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 in the title but this also includes other ‘older’ laptops that have the ‘boxy’ grey look to them and the mouse touchpad that isn’t actually a touchpad.

Usually when connecting to a wireless network that has the WPA encryption (whether it be TKIP or AES it doesn’t matter) a message dialog will come up saying check that the password etc is correct and then you simply have to click the ‘OK’ button and your no better off.

The actually problem is that the older type of laptops only support the WEP encryption due to the wireless cards inside of the laptops being 802.11b, however, WPA requires a card with the 802.11g standard.

In simple terms it means you need to use the WEP encryption when configuring your wireless network but then this means that people such as the likes of me could easily tap into your network and start messing around with your files, maybe even take a look at your bank details while your doing online banking if works a little quiet. So, we don’t want our wireless networks using the WEP encryption do we, we may as well just give local hackers a few hundred quid each month.

For once the solution to this is very simple, you need to go out and buy yourself a wireless dongle. If your not too familiar with different types of wireless dongles and what they do (in other words if your not a geek) then don’t worry as every wireless dongle I’ve come across in the shops support WPA encryptions.

Once you’ve installed your wireless dongle you will also need to remember to disable the laptops built in wireless hardware so it doesn’t override the dongle which means a quick visit to the Device Manager. Again, if your not a geek then you can read this article on how to access the device manager and once your there simply expand the ‘Network Adapters’ list, right click on the appropriate wireless (in this case it has the word Toshiba in the item) and click disable. It’ll ask if your sure about it, say yes then off you go. Once you open the wireless window again it should ask for the password this time.

Tip:

What I would also suggest as the sort of laptops that produce this problem don’t have much memory or CPU power is disable or simply don’t install the wireless utility that comes on the disk, this should save you quite a big portion of your memory in relation to the amount you have.

In most installations this will simply require you to untick a box at some point in the installation or tick a box if it says ‘Use windows zero configuration’ (or something along those lines).

If it isn’t as simple as that and a seperate installation pops up after the initial installation of the actual drivers then you can open Task Manager and end the process. I was installing a Netgear WPN111 wireless dongle that came with my router and the process was named ‘wpn111_2_0_setup[1].exe’, I’m sure yours will be roughly the same having setup.exe somewhere in the name.
